When HISD focused its ReBuild HISD  program on West University Elementary School, English + Associates was asked to update a portion of the existing, historic school as well as design a new building.  By adding to the existing campus, we felt that we were participating in a process that began in 1925 with the original campus planning – an idea that should be honored as we developed the design.  We saw the overall campus as part of a continuum of planning and design, gaining a new structure approximately every 10 years to keep up with the school’s needs.

Our most critical obligation to the school was meeting HISD’s established learning environment criteria.  Additionally, the project sought to satisfy the needs of the large number of stake-holders, whose distinct goals often appeared contrary to one another.  Stake-holders included The City of West University, the Trisports organization (representing organized softball, baseball and soccer), the school’s PTO, community residents and HISD.  We measure our success in this project with more than just providing a beautiful, functional and efficient building – we also fulfilled the needs of diverse user groups with little or no compromise.
