Department of Veterans Affairs Net Zero Building
English + Associates was asked by SpawGlass to join their team to design a building for the Veterans Administration Hospital located in Houston.
This new facility is being designed to supply the VA campus with enough electricity to reduce the VA’s dependency on the electrical grid, and ultimately save them millions of dollars in operations costs yearly. Additionally, the building will achieve a Net Zero Energy Building rating of NZRB:C as defined by the U.S. Department of Energy, as well as meet a LEED platinum goal.
The project will utilize a combination of combined heat and power (CHP), solar, wind, and bio-diesel to achieve net –zero. The use of a 135kW solar array will provide the required amount of energy to feed the lighting, plug loads, and HVAC within the building. The Bio-Diesel Generator will supply the remainder of the power needed to run the large equipment, switchgear, and also provide a minimum of 7% of the annual consumption of the VA campus.
